Love this book
Scintillating. Very objective, advancing a new wave of protest that takes incredible courage. We can all learn from Alyokhina.
Others have written about the discursive nature of her diaries/missives/memories. Her experiences and the way they are presented are, though small, substantial. Both an easy and difficult read. Worth it and worth purchasing to read and pass on to others.
I love reading stories of brave people. Closest I can come to supporting. I took away 1 star for glaring typos, but charming and powerful nevertheless.
Unlike celebrity 'activists' who fire blanks to no effect against soft targets in nothing more than glorified virtue signalling, Masha Alyokhina has the balls and intelligence to take on serious, entrenched power; power that can really do you harm - she treads in the path of Anna Politkovskaya; lets hope she doesn't meet the same fate. A truly remarkable story.
This book seems illogical. Masha lives in a world that does not really accept the concepts of human rights or the power of prisoners to protest conditions. Yet she manages to be a agent for positive change. Amazing story. The world needs more people to say no to tyranny.
Maria Alyokhina was given the Hannah Arendt award for her activist work in Russia, and this book details why.
She has stood up to totalitarianism, to erosion of the Orthodox church by the state and KGB, and demanded (and won) basic rights for Russian prisoners, including in the Siberian gulag. She is now out of prison and working on rights for other citizens unjustly tried and imprisoned in Russia.
She stepped out on faith, faith in revolution, faith in her country, faith in women, and faith in performance art, of all things, and her story is truly a remarkable one. As we face restriction of our rights and the specter of an authoritarian take-over at home (or at least an intended one), we would do well to be inspired by the story of Maria Alyokhina, the band Pussy Riot, and her successful Russian organization Media Zona.
