My journey with this series has finally come to an end! Everything about this finale was wonderful. It wrapped up a lot of the loose ends and plot threads created throughout the other four books in a way that was ultimately satisfying. Two of the best things about this series were the characters and the world. Each book brought a new level to how big this world actually is which was wonderful. With some books it feels like you never fully get to see the entirety of the world that was created. That is not the case with this. Also the characters were executed flawlessly. They each had their own trials and tribulations to surpass which ultimately brought them all back together in the end. Action was still top notch. Every scene is so descriptive and engaging. Even the scenes involving the cutters (you know what I am talking about if you read this) are so vivid, sometimes to the point where I cringe. I am so happy that I discovered this series and also this author because he quickly rose to be one of my all time favorites and I will continue to purchase his books as they come out. Highly Highly recommend this series to anyone looking for flintlock fantasy. It is a bit of a chore to get past the military jargon but once you do this world will take you by storm!Tags : The Infernal Battalion (The Shadow Campaigns) [Django Wexler] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. Military might and arcane power clash in Django Wexler’s thrilling new Shadow Campaigns novel. The Beast,Django Wexler,The Infernal Battalion (The Shadow Campaigns),Ace,0451477340,Fantasy - Dark Fantasy,Fantasy - Epic,Fantasy - Historical,FICTION Fantasy Epic.,FICTION Fantasy Historical.,Fantasy fiction,Imaginary wars and battles,Imaginary wars and battles;Fiction.,War fiction,War stories,AMERICAN SCIENCE FICTION AND FANTASY,FICTION Fantasy Dark Fantasy,FICTION Fantasy Epic,FICTION Fantasy Historical,Fantasy,Fiction,Fiction-Fantasy,FictionFantasy - Dark Fantasy,FictionFantasy - Historical,GENERAL,General Adult,Monograph Series, any,United States, epic fantasy;epic fantasy books;epic fantasy series;fantasy;fantasy books;military fiction;alternate history;alternate history books;alternate history military fiction;historical fantasy;dark fantasy;sword and sorcery;the beast;Elysium;Shadow Campaigns;django wexler shadow campaigns;science fiction and fantasy;fantasy novels;historical fiction;fiction;novels;fiction books;books fiction;fantasy books for adults;fantasy book;fantasy fiction;fantasy novel;magic;adventure;steampunk;dragons, fantasy; epic fantasy; historical fantasy; dark fantasy; military fantasy; sword and sorcery; Shadow Campaigns; the beast; Elysium; epic fantasy books; epic fantasy series; fantasy books; military fiction; alternate history; alternate history books; alternate history military fiction; django wexler shadow campaigns; science fiction and fantasy; fantasy books for adults; historical fiction; fiction; fiction books; science fiction and fantasy books; magic; steampunk; adventure; historical; epic; fantasy romance
The Infernal Battalion The Shadow Campaigns Django Wexler 9780451477347 Books Reviews
I’ve enjoyed the series in parallel with the other musket and magic authors having a moment right now. This particular arc was starting to groan under its own weight, and while the writing, plot and pacing of The Infernal Battalion was perfectly adequate, I hope the author will take this opportunity for a soft reboot and continue on with new characters and places in the same universe, with the leads from the first 5 books taking a rest.
Must read if you’ve followed the series, but glad it has ground to a halt.
The earlier books always made sure the reader knew that problems were NOT all resolved, that some just mutated a bit and others hidden before grew large and horrific...but this “final” book seemed to be a rather classical happy ending! Barely a whiff of bittersweet at all, but it was a very damn fun read in all!
Mild Spoilers (As in nothing that will ruin the plot)
Obviously, anyone who has read teh previous books can expect what they'll find in this one, battles, brisk pacing and fantastic characters. I loved the characters and the little plots that each character was involved in. Raes working in diplomacy was a personal favorite . Winter gets a lot of PoV and her chapters are a joy to read too. Come for the flintlock fantasy stay for the characters and absolutely amazing flintlock fantasy and battles.
For those worrying about Janus after the last book, never fear, Janus gets some PoV chapters too.
When we last saw Janus bet Vhalnich (Napoleon), he had been on his
way to comfortable internal exile on his estates, having been on
the verge of causing Vordan (France) more trouble by winning the
war against the Sworn Church than the kingdom could stand.
Unfortunately, he was ambushed on the road by avatars of the Judgement
Beast and subsumed into that apocalyptic entity.
As this book opens, the news arrives at the Capital that Vhalnich
has declared himself Emperor and is marching for the city, and our
regular cast must deal with events, not knowing the Beast is loose and
Vhalnich is possessed.
General Marcus d'Ivorie, well known to be a confederate of Vhalnich's,
has been passed over by the Estates General for command of the
defending army and must watch from an inferior position as a too
clever by half superior makes a hash of the defense until he suddenly
finds himself in charge of what's left -- which isn't much.
Queen Raesinia must seek a quick and humiliating alliance with Borel
(the England analog), possibly even having to give herself in marriage
as part of the price, and hang her romance with Marcus..
Winter Ihernglass is still trapped in the Russia analog having been
on a special mission when hostilities ceased. As she bears the only
weapon that could possibly stop the Beast, she must, somehow, make her
way back across half a continent on foot, and then by the way confront
the Beast's original body, which was her first love..
Add in other non viewpoint, but appealing characters like "best
thief in the world" Alex and the deadly Sothe and consider that if
any man could retain flashes of himself inside the Beast it would
be Janus bet Vhalnich, and we have probably five sixth's of a very
entertaining book. I do think the end was a slight let down, since
as the Queen noted it appeared to the man in the street that there
had been quite a lot of fighting that didn't really accomplish
anything -- I'm not sure why it was important to keep the involvement
of the Beast secret. After all, he was the basis for the whole
religion believed (in varying degrees) by most of the population,
and his *first* incarnation was certainly not a secret. Still it
was a fairly satisfying ending for those in the know (including two
who got a better shake than you would expect), and there were enough
arrows shot into the air that you could see a follow up series
fairly easily.
