This book was recommended to me by a friend. Once I got into the book, I couldn't put it down. The book details day to day life with a houseful of misfit animals - dogs, cats, and mice. I could certainly identify with the author's stories. I had a mouse and dozens of cats as childhood pets. I currently have a houseful of dogs. The author describes the many vet visits she made with her pets, and some of the tough decisions she was forced to make. I was greatly impressed by the author's knowledge of various animal ailments. Kudos to her for taking the time to research each problem as it came up.
The book is filled with funny animal stories. I especially enjoyed the tales of dressing the dogs up for Halloween and entering them in costume contests. The book also includes many sad times when one pet after another made the sad journey to the Rainbow Bridge. I highly recommend this book to animal lovers. You will definitely laugh and cry. You may even learn a few things about animal care and the treatment of various health issues pet owners often face. I enjoyed this book so much that I am now reading another of this author's pet tales.

Cayr has a wonderful writing style -- intelligent, warm, witty, and often heart-rending, and never sappy. Though it's clear Cayr is a "dog person," (gasp!,) she and her life partner have also been devoted enough to animals to rescue and nurture a few cats -- and more than a few mice -- along the way. A great read for animal lovers.
The second book, following Born without a Tail, is if possible better than the first. The author brings alive the small pleasures and also the pain of those who live with a pack. Rescue people have some of the most extraordinary stories to tell and this book tells them well. The pain of loss and the unexpected beauties of life are shared in this book and I'm the richer for the reading. I have a pack myself and I could empathize with the author and feel as though I'd recognize the dogs and cats if I saw them! The author has spent a lifetime in exploration of the terrain where human and non human lives intersect and left us this treasure map. Read it, you'll be glad you did.
I absolutely loved this book! The author has a perception of animals' personalities that few people have. I was thrilled to read about the kindness she had for the mice. Many years ago I had rescued a male & female and they had a very strong bond; when the female could no longer run on her wheel, the male would move it very slowly for her so she could get some exercise.......
When I lost my much-loved dog, Cosmo, a number of people asked me if I would get another dog. When I answered "yes" they responded with shock. "How could you go through the hurt of losing another dog?" In Circling the Waggins, C.A. Wulff answers this question in ways that entertain, educate and touch the reader deeply. After losing a series of elderly pets, the author teaches us the value of the entire experience. "I contemplate this thought for some time, this bridge between hanging on and letting go; how every time we put ourselves out there - opening our hearts to love others -we make ourselves vulnerable. Fortunately, the healing power of that love and the value of those unforgettable bonds far outweigh the eventual losses we suffer."
This story of a two women who devote their lives to caring for rescued dogs, cats and even feeder mice doesn't fail to entertain and keep you turning the pages. I will never forget the image of big dog Waldo, dressed for Halloween as Captain Waldo, Lobster Fisherman, accompanied by three little dog siblings in bright red lobster costumes. Throughout the book young animals cavort and play. Elderly animals sicken and die. The circle of life continues and humans and animals live together in an atmosphere of love and warmth.
I have to admit I had to ignore my differing opinion on when a pet should be put down. I hate putting one of my beloved pets down, but I hate even more when I know they are hurting and no longer have a good quality of life. And smoking with them in the car...really?
That being said, I still enjoyed this book. It is obvious that these women love their pets and the author is able to tell their stories in a humorous and loving way. So, if you like stories about dogs, cats and even mice, then you will enjoy this book. I do recommend it.
This was a very touching book. Get out the tissues. It was very realistic concerning life with cats, dogs and , yes, mice. Also the reality of the care of older pets. The author made clear that taking on a pet should be a commitment for the pet's lifetime, including all the good, the bad and the ugly.
"Circling the Waggins" is a most enjoyable read! Cayr's vignettes of life with her pets are alternately humorous, poignant, thought provoking, informative, and sentimental. Each chapter tells of a separate situation and can be read in a short time, making it an especially good choice for those many times one wants a "quick read". A PERFECT vacation choice!
After reading this book, if you're a pet owner, you're sure to see your canine or feline companion as more of an individual personality than you previously considered possible. If you have no pet of your own, this book will help you understand the strong connection between people and pets. Having read both this book, and Cayr's first one, "Born Without a Tail", my appreciation for the depth and breadth of animal personalities, needs, emotions, etc. has greatly expanded.
As I finish her books, I find myself thinking of her many pets, from Dillon to Waldo, as my own friends, which is a real compliment for the quality of her writing. She truly brings her animal family to life in her books. I look forward to her future sharing of her life with "the pack".
